Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Maine and MaineHealth have sponsored a study that quantifies the cost of three risk factors associated with our modern lifestyle - physical inactivity, being overweight and/or being obese. The study examined the impact of these risk factors on three major cost components - medical care, workers' compensation and lost productivity. The findings were alarming - the cost of these three risk factors in Maine is staggering - more than $2.5 billion in total direct and indirect costs on Maine's economy. That's the bad news. The good news is that even modest improvements in physical activity and weight among Maine adults can save us hundreds of millions of dollars.
Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and MaineHealth hope that this cost appraisal will encourage public policies and practices that will improve the health of Maine people and dramatically reduce the risks and costs of physical inactivity, overweight and obesity in Maine.
