At Anthem Life, we believe in doing one thing and doing it well.
As a subsidiary of Anthem, Inc., one of the largest health benefit companies in the United States, Anthem Life has grown with the family. But we haven’t outgrown our strong foundation, and we haven’t lost our focus. Our core business is and has always been group life and disability benefits.
Where we started
Anthem Life is a stock life insurance company wholly owned by Anthem, Inc. It was incorporated in Indiana in June 1956 under the name Associates Life Insurance Co. The company name was later changed to Anthem Life Insurance Company of Indiana, and ultimately to Anthem Life Insurance Company.
How we grew
Today’s Anthem Life is the product of a series of mergers and acquisitions over many years. Those changes continually expanded our scope while strengthening and consolidating our operations.
In 1995 Anthem’s expansion into Ohio brought another well-established group life and disability company, Community National Assurance Company, into the family. The following year the companies combined their business within Anthem Life and Community National’s operations became Anthem Life’s main administrative office.
As Anthem established its East region, Anthem Life’s main office continued to support Anthem’s growth. Then in 1999 Anthem’s expansion into the West brought Rocky Mountain Life Insurance Company to the family. Rocky Mountain Life’s operations became Anthem Life’s Western regional office.
In December 2000, Anthem Life Insurance Company, Rocky Mountain Life Insurance Company and another related company, Anthem Life Insurance Company of California, were consolidated to create the current Anthem Life legal entity.
Anthem Life today
Anthem Life Insurance Company is admitted as a life and health insurance company in 47 states and the District of Columbia. We are licensed in all states except New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
Within Anthem’s Blue Cross and Blue Shield regions, Anthem Life’s products are usually packaged with their health coverage. Outside those regions, we offer life and disability coverage either unbundled from health coverage; packaged with Anthem’s dental, vision, prescription or EAP coverage; or packaged with health coverage from other business partners.
