10 Keys to Using Your Blue Advantage Plan Wisely
PW_000860
At Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, we're committed to bringing you a health plan that's high quality, affordable and easy to use. Here are the basics to help you use your Blue Advantage Plan wisely:
 | Select a primary care physician.
If you did not choose a primary care physician from the BlueAdvantage network when you enrolled, please look in your Anthem Provider Directory, click here to search our directory online, or call customer service. Each dependent covered under your plan should also select a primary care physician. |
 | Get to know your doctor.
It's important for you to feel comfortable with your primary care physician. He or she is your personal doctor who will provide most preventive care and medical services. |
 | Coordinate all care through your primary care physician.
Unless it's an emergency, always call your primary care physician first when you need care. He or she will see that you get the care you need, referring you to specialists or the hospital when necessary. |
 | If you're a Blue Advantage HMO plan member
If you receive care that is not approved by your primary care physician, or if you go to a doctor, who does not participate in the Blue Advantage network, you may have to pay for those services. |
 | If you're a Blue Advantage Point-of-Service member
You have the flexibility to go to any doctor in the Blue Advantage network without a referral from your primary care physician and still receive benefits. However, for the lowest out-of-pocket costs, you should coordinate care through your primary care physician. |
 | Be prepared for an emergency.
If you are in a life-threatening situation, call 911 or go immediately to the nearest emergency facility. After receiving emergency care, notify your primary care physician within 48 hours. |
 | Carry your health plan ID card with you.
Your Blue Advantage ID card gives network providers the information they need to take care of your claims. Present your ID card whenever you receive health care services. |
 | Know your benefits.
Blue Advantage provides a comprehensive program of health care services. There are services that aren't covered by your plan, and it's important for you to understand what they are. Take the time to read your benefit booklet carefully, and call customer service if you have any questions. |
 | Know your rights and responsibilities.
Every partnership involves rights and responsibilities. Please review your rights and responsibilities as a Blue Advantage member, so you can do your part to receive the highest quality health care. |
 | Understand the appeals process.
If you ever have a concern about your health plan or the services you receive, we want to hear about it. |
 | Be healthy and stay healthy.
Your Blue Advantage health plan covers a full range of preventive care benefits: immunizations, well-baby care, maternity care, checkups and tests. We encourage you to take advantage of these benefits. Preventing illness and finding problems before they become serious is an important part of staying healthy. |
