BlueCard is a national program that enables members traveling away from home or living in another Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Plan area to receive health care services through a single, electronic claim processing reimbursement network. The program links participating health care providers and independent BCBS Plans around the world. 
How do I identify a BlueCard member?
You can identify a BlueCard member of more of the alpha prefix types listed below: 
Plan-specific prefixes are assigned to each Plan and begin with an "Q", "X", "Y" or "Z". The first two positions indicate the member's home Plan, the third position indicates the product in which the member is enrolled.

First character X, Y, Z or Q

Second character A-Z

Third character A-Z

account specific prefixes - assigned to centrally processed national accounts
international alpha prefixes from foreign BCBS Plan members

What products are included in the BlueCard Program?
The BlueCard Program includes traditional, PPO, POS, HMO, Medicare Advantage and Medicare supplement products and, depending on the plan design, may pay claims for inpatient, outpatient and professional health care services. 
 
Which products and accounts are excluded from the BlueCard program:
Prescription medications
Stand-alone dental
Stand-alone vision and hearing
Claims for the Federal Employee Program (FEP) are exempt from the BlueCard Program. Claims should be filed using your FEP guidelines.
 
What are important BlueCard phone numbers I should keep on hand?

Call this number when referring patients to a physician or health care facility in another area.
BlueCard Eligibility® (800) 676-BLUE [2583]
Call this number to verify membership and benefit information on patients from other Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans and help speed up payment of their claims.
