Anthem BCBS and The Save Antibiotic Strength Campaign

Antibiotic resistance is one of the nation's most dangerous public health threats. America's medicine cabinet is in jeopardy of losing some of its most powerful prescriptions.
The Coalition for Affordable Quality Healthcare (CAQH), a group of 25 health plans and insurers working together to improve the healthcare experience for consumers and doctors, has joined the fight to preserve the power of antibiotics.
Save Antibiotic Strength (SAS) is a program on both the national and local levels to educate Americans and to arm physicians with the information and tools they need to appropriately use antibiotics. CAQH is collaborating with SAS partners to share information and promote appropriate antibiotic use.
Local pilot programs will collect data to establish levels of antibiotic use for treatment of pharyngitis (sore throat) and then re-measure periodically to see if the SAS efforts are fostering improvement.
Five CAQH member plans – Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, CIGNA Health Care, Health Net (formerly PHS Health Plans) and Oxford Health Plans - are leading the charge in the state of Connecticut to help preserve the power of antibiotics. The Connecticut program includes:
Statewide mailing to all physicians. Educational materials developed by CAQH partners will address the appropriate use of antibiotics in the treatment of upper respiratory infections. The materials include information on the treatment of upper respiratory infections in both children and adults.
Patient education. Outreach to patients through advertising and health plan newsletter articles will help raise awareness about antibiotic resistance.
Employer education. The CAQH Connecticut team has also developed educational articles for employer newsletters to reach an even larger audience of Connecticut citizens.
Data collection. To determine the success of the SAS campaign in Connecticut, data measurement will be conducted following strict data specifications that were developed by technical experts within CAQH health plans. A baseline measurement of the incidence and treatment of pharyngitis (sore throat) will be compiled and follow-up re-measurement will be performed after the implementation of the educational outreach program.
