Dr. Karen Remley Named Chief Medical Director for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield

RICHMOND, Va.  – June 4, 2014 – Karen Remley, M.D., has been named chief medical director of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Virginia. She replaces Jay Schukman, M.D., who has accepted another role in the organization leading the clinical efforts for Anthem’s parent company’s East Region. 

In her new position, Dr. Remley will be responsible for the management of Anthem’s clinical programs, including care coordination and quality of care initiatives, serving Anthem’s employer and Individual market clients.  She will also have a leadership role in expanding Anthem’s provider collaboration activities such as Enhanced Personal Health Care.

Dr. Remley is a former Commissioner of Health for the Commonwealth of Virginia serving in that role from 2008 to 2012.  Dr. Remley has worked for Anthem in the past serving as the lead medical director for Clinical Quality Programs, which included Anthem’s Quality Insights Hospital Incentive Program, the company’s nationally recognized program that financially rewards hospitals for improving health system quality.  Most recently, she was employed by Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk as the founding director of the
M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health.

Dr. Remley received her Bachelor of Arts, Biology and her Doctorate of Medicine from University of Missouri, Kansas City. She also received her Masters of Business Administration, Health Services from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.

Dr. Remley will begin with Anthem June 23, 2014 and plans to continue her strong track record of being an industry leader in the health care field in Virginia.
