When You Need LGBTQ+-Friendly Support, Resources Are Available
The mental and physical health of people in the LGBTQ+ community can often be affected by how much support they have available, and the quality of that support. With the unique challenges this community faces, having access to inclusive care providers and safe, supportive spaces can make all the difference.
Whether it’s connecting with mental health professionals and doctors who understand LGBTQ+ concerns or finding a support group you align with, the right resources can help you or a loved one thrive.
Supportive resources for the LGBTQ+ community
There are many organizations dedicated to helping LGBTQ+ people find extra support, navigate crises, find mental health treatment, advocate for their rights, and live fulfilling lives as their authentic selves.
- Mental Health America’s LGBTQ+ Mental Health Resource Center can help you find LGBTQ+-friendly therapy or peer support.
- The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) has a list of crisis prevention hotlines for LGBTQ+ people, including those in intersectional communities whose other identities (being Black, Hispanic, blind, autistic, etc.) also play a part in shaping their experiences. They also offer a detailed list of resources to help LGBTQ+ people navigate the healthcare system, including help understanding their patient rights.
- The Trevor Project has resources related to a range of LGBTQ+ topics, including coming out, gender identity, and self-acceptance. There are also resources for allies that you can share with family or friends who may want to better support you but aren’t sure how. The Trevor Project also has hotlines and text options available for LGBTQ+ youth to find support.
- PFLAG has resources for LGBTQ+ people and their loved ones, as well as people looking to be a stronger ally. You can find information related to faith-based support, protecting LGBTQ+ rights, and finding community as an LGBTQ+ person.
- Trans Lifeline offers a peer support hotline for trans and questioning individuals. They also have a large variety of resources available for trans people, including those with different intersectional backgrounds.
Finding healthcare that meets your needs
Adults in the LGBTQ+ community are twice as likely to report negative healthcare experiences in the last three years than non-LGBTQ+ people, according to a KFF survey of racism, discrimination, and health. That stays consistent across different racial groups. Experiences like this can lead to worse health and delayed healthcare — not to mention the effect this kind of discrimination may have on your mental health. That’s why it’s so important to find doctors you trust who are allies to the LGBTQ+ community.
Where to start your search:
- Visit lgbtqhealthcaredirectory.org and enter the type of care provider you need and your ZIP code to get a list of healthcare professionals in your area.
- Call your health plan and ask if they have a list of LGBTQ+-friendly care providers in your plan’s network.
- If you have an Anthem health plan, call Member Services at the number on your member ID card for help or use the Find Care tool on Sydney℠ Health or anthem.com. You can search for primary care doctors, specialists, or therapists as needed.
If you have access to Anthem’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) through an employer-sponsored health plan, you can find professional, confidential counseling for you and your household members, including a set number of visits each year at no extra cost. There are also additional resources like articles, videos, and podcasts on topics such as parenting LGBTQ+ children, LGBTQ+ legal rights, and bullying. You can log in at anthem.com/eap with your company code. Call the EAP number listed on the home page for more information about your visits.
When you need love, support, understanding, or respect, remember there are people, programs, and care providers ready to help. Take advantage of the resources included here or others that may be available to the LGBTQ+ community to help you live freely and proudly as the person you are.
EAP products are offered by Anthem Insurance Companies, Inc.
Sydney Health is offered through an arrangement with Carelon Digital Platforms, a separate company offering mobile application services on behalf of your health plan.
