Individuals can access free mammograms, dental screenings, blood pressure and glucose checks, diapers, and community resources
TOLEDO, OHIO – To improve access to preventive care and support Ohioans’ whole health, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio will host a free community wellness fair and breast cancer screening event on Friday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will take place at the Anthem Welcome Center located at 132 North Summit Street in Toledo. It’s free and open to the public, and no RSVP is required.
The Mercy Health Mobile Mammography Unit will provide mammograms for eligible individuals.* Mercy Health nurses will also offer free blood pressure checks and glucose screenings. Liberty Dental will offer free dental screenings for children and adults and fluoride treatments for children under age 5, and Anthem will provide Cologuard colon cancer screening kits to eligible Anthem members.
In addition, Anthem will distribute a supply of free diapers to up to 75 families at the event. The diaper distribution is part of a new pilot program with the National Diaper Bank Network’s local chapter, the Junior League of Toledo, to expand access to diapers for families with infants and young children, helping reduce financial strain while generating evidence on how meeting basic material needs can improve maternal and child health outcomes.
“Early detection and routine screenings play a critical role in helping individuals stay healthy and avoid more serious and costly health issues down the road,” said Michelle Stoughton, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio’s Medicaid plan. “By bringing these health services and other community resources directly to Toledo families, we’re helping to remove barriers and empower people to take charge of their health.”
Representatives from the following community organizations will also be available to connect individuals and families to local resources and services: Alzheimer’s Association Northwest Ohio Chapter; Early Head Start; Health Partners of Western Ohio; Help Me Grow; Lucas County Suicide Prevention Coalition; NAMI; Northern Ohio REACH; Northwest Ohio Pathways HUB; Starting Fresh Program; Tiny Hearts Remembered; and Toledo-Lucas County Healthy Start.
Individuals with questions about the fair or screenings should contact Anthem_Toledo@anthem.com.
*Mammogram Eligibility Requirements: Individuals must be age 40 or older to receive a mammogram. Those under 40 must provide a physician’s order. Individuals must be able to walk up and down stairs and stand without the use of aids such as a cane or walker. At least 365 days must have passed since the individual’s last mammogram.
