  • You want access to extra benefits that Original Medicare doesn’t cover like dental and vision

When should you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan?

As soon as you enroll in Original Medicare

The best time to enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan is right after you enroll in Original Medicare Parts A and B.  This could be during the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month and the three months after, or later when you retire. Each year, you can add or change a Medicare Advantage Plan during the Annual Election Period (AEP), which lasts from October 15 to December 7. Sometimes you can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP).

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans work like traditional HMOs and PPOs and can include Special Needs Plans.

HMO

On an HMO plan, you’ll choose a primary care physician (PCP) who you’ll see for all your check-ups and regular exams. Your PCP also directs you to the right specialists when you need them.

PPO

With a PPO, you still pick a primary care physician for check-ups, but you can also choose to see doctors or specialist in your network without needing a referral. You can also see doctors outside your network but services may cost more.

Special Needs Plans

Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans (DSNPs) are designed for people with both Medicare and Medicaid. Special Needs Plans are HMO plans with prescription drug coverage that’s included.
