Self-Care for Essential Employees

April 22, 2020

As an essential employee, you play a vital role in servicing our communities during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We hope these tips will help keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy:

Keep germs out of your home. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before you leave work. If soap isn’t available, use hand sanitizer. Regularly disinfect frequently touched surfaces at work and home. Bring a change of clothes and shoes to work to wear home. Take a shower right after work.

Clean your hands often. Wash your hands often in the workplace, especially after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Avoid close contact, if possible, in the workplace. Keep a safe, physical distance from coworkers and other people while working and on breaks. Wear a cloth face covering or face mask for protection and store personal items, like your mobile phone, away from other people.

Monitor your health. Watch for any symptoms of COVID-19. If you have a fever or feel sick, call your doctor and stay home. In some cases, your employers may ask you to take your temperature to make sure you don’t have a fever.

Let go of what you can. Understand it’s natural to feel anxiety and fear. Talk to family, friends or a mental health professional about your concerns.

Maintain healthy habits and routines. Get plenty of sleep, eat nutritious foods and get exercise regularly. Try to do activities that you normally would to lower your stress levels and create a sense of normalcy.

Unplug and unwind. Find ways to disconnect from your job and media coverage. Meditate, stretch, take deep breaths, go for a walk, read or practice yoga. Do something to focus on yourself.

We are grateful to those serving our communities in essential services. Thank you for your hard work, sacrifice and dedication. We’ll continue keeping you informed of ways to protect yourself and your family. We wish you well.
