In 2025, the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation invested more than $14 million to improve health outcomes across California, supporting dozens of nonprofit partners focused on maternal health, food security, substance use disorder prevention and treatment, and disaster relief.

Anthem employees also deepened their commitment to the communities where they live and work, contributing $2 million and nearly 17,600 volunteer hours statewide. Together, these efforts underscore the Anthem Foundation’s ongoing commitment to expanding access to services in California.

“Supporting the health of California communities is at the heart of our mission,” said Beth Andersen, president, Anthem Blue Cross in California. “Through the dedication of our associates and the work of the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation, we are investing in solutions that address local needs, strengthen community resilience, and improve lives across the state.”

Improving Maternal Health Outcomes

In 2025, the Foundation invested $2.3 million to support maternal health programs focused on reducing disparities in birth outcomes, expanding culturally responsive care, and supporting healthy pregnancies across California. These investments not only improved maternal and infant health outcomes but also strengthened community-based systems that support families and promote long-term health.

Encouraging Food as Medicine and Improving Chronic Health Outcomes

The Foundation invested $1.5 million to advance Food as Medicine initiatives that address food insecurity and integrate nutrition into clinical care. These programs addressed social drivers of health while providing culturally responsive support to high-need communities.

Reducing Substance Use Disorders and Strengthening Behavioral Health

With $3.7 million invested in substance use disorder (SUD) programs, the Foundation partnered with community organizations expanding access to treatment, prevention, harm reduction, and recovery services across the state. These investments reflect a comprehensive approach to behavioral health, supporting prevention, strengthening provider capacity, and ensuring communities have the resources needed to address addiction and recovery.

Supporting Community Resiliency and Disaster Relief

In response to the catastrophic Southern California wildfires in January 2025, the Anthem Blue Cross Foundation committed $4.5 million to help communities recover and rebuild. The Foundation’s commitment represents a portion of a broader $10 million wildfire relief pledge announced by the Anthem Foundation and Anthem Blue Cross. These efforts build on the Anthem Foundation’s longstanding focus on community preparedness, emergency response, and sustained recovery, ensuring vulnerable populations receive critical support when disasters strike.

A Continued Commitment to Health in California

Through its 2025 investments, the Anthem Foundation advanced innovative, community-led solutions that improve health outcomes and expand access to high-quality, community-based care across California. By partnering with nonprofits rooted in the communities they serve, the Anthem Foundation continues to play a vital role in addressing complex health challenges and supporting the well-being of Californians statewide, work made possible through the ongoing engagement and support of Anthem associates and employees.
